At the Texas Vision & Laser Center, we believe that complete and thorough eye exams are essential for ensuring a lifetime of healthy vision. When you come in for your complete eye exam, our doctors and staff will obtain a thorough patient history, including your past medical, surgical and ocular histories. We will obtain a list of all of your medications, and record any medicine allergies. You will then receive an eight-point eye exam to check every basic aspect of your vision.

Dry eye syndrome, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, affects approximately one out every five adults. This very common disorder is due to the improper quality or quantityof tear production by the eyes. In order for the eyes to see clearly, the surface of the eye must remain moist at all times. The surface of the eye is the only place in the entire body that requires this extreme level of lubrication, made necessary because it is exposed to the elements all day every day. Consequently, proper and healthy tear production is crucial to good vision and comfortable eyes.

Presbyopia is an age-related change that typically affects patients around the age of 45. Presbyopic patients typically require reading glasses, when they previously did not require any glasses. Presbyopia occurs because the flexible lens inside the eye, which helps to focus objects by changing its shape, gradually becomes rigid.

The most common reason for blurred vision in patients of all ages is a condition called refractive error. Refractive error results in blurred images, at either distance or near, because the shape of the eye, and the size of the eye are not ideal. Approximately 20-40% of the public has refractive error to some degree. Since the length of the eye cannot be altered, refractive error is corrected with glasses, contacts or refractive surgery by changing the curvature of light as it enters the eye. Glasses and contacts allow images to become clear to the wearer by changing the curvature of light entering the eye, making it ideal for that patient’s eye size.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Consequently, when a patient has diabetes there is an increase in the amount of “sugar” in the blood stream. Over time, this leads to a multitude of health problems including kidney failure, nerve damage, increased chance of heart attack or stroke, and blindness.

Macular degeneration is a painless condition that impacts the macula, which is part of the eye that allows you to see centrally – or the center of your visual range. This disease is much more common in people over the age of 60, so you’ll often hear it called “age-related macular degeneration,” or AMD.
